Eastern Oregon Eastern Oregon celebrates National Agriculture Day (March 19) this spring - a commemoration of the crucial role that agriculture plays in the United States, not only for its necessary food supply production but also for its significant contribution to sustaining local communities and driving economic growth. In Eastern Oregon, agriculture serves as a primary source of employment for its residents, with its abundant crops and livestock positioning it as one of the top ten U.S. states in numerous agricultural products, like hay, wheat, sugar beets, onions, and potatoes. Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC) is proud to support this annual celebration of agriculture to provide recognition and support for these regional businesses and residents.

Today, agriculture in Eastern Oregon and throughout the nation is experiencing a significant transformation driven by various trends shaping the industry's future. Food Business News notes several trends driving change in food and agriculture production. These include technological advancements, such as precision farming techniques and data analytics, to optimize crop yields and resource efficiency. Additionally, a growing demand for sustainable and regenerative agriculture practices arises as consumers increasingly prioritize environmentally friendly and ethically sourced products. The rise of alternative proteins and plant-based diets is another notable trend, reflecting changing consumer preferences and concerns about health, sustainability, and animal welfare.

Agricultural Influence in Eastern Oregon

In 2022, the USDA Census of Agriculture indicated 676 farms in Baker County, 374 in Grant, 477 in Harney, and 806 in Union, covering a total of 3,373,507 acres. For Baker, Harney, Grant, and Union Counties, the primary crop sold was wheat for grain at nearly 2,382,718 bushels sold, while the leading livestock sold was cattle and calves, with a total of nearly 150,000 sold in the four counties combined. 
Building on the region's culture of innovation, the Eastern Oregon University Agricultural Entrepreneur program offers students a unique opportunity to delve into the evolving landscape of agriculture. The program equips students with the skills to thrive in future agriculture by blending traditional crop production practices with modern techniques and entrepreneurial strategies.
