News
In the November issue of Site Selection Magazine, site selectors were asked what mattered most when it comes to location criteria.
Topping the list? Power availability.
It’s become even more important than the actual cost of power. More important than things like incentives and ease of permitting.
In other words: No power? No projects.
There’s Power Availability in Eastern Oregon
Electricity cost and consumption in the U.S. have presented a challenging situation for providers and users alike. Consumption has remained relatively steady over the past decade, with the average U.S. household using 10,500 kWh annually in 2015 and slightly more at 10,791 kWh in 2022.
However, the average cost of 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) in the United States rose from 13.5 cents in January 2019 to 17.3 cents by January 2024, with 2022 experiencing the steepest increase since the turn of the century at 10.7%!
That’s where Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC) stands apart. We purchase clean, reliable hydropower from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) at some of the lowest and most stable rates nationwide.
Our cooperative model, which focuses on member-owners rather than profit, has helped ensure reliability and affordability amid broader economic challenges. As a result, OTEC could keep rates steady from 2019 until March 2025.
We’re also one of Oregon's largest distribution cooperatives. Headquartered in Baker City, Oregon, with district offices in La Grande, John Day, and Burns, OTEC serves approximately 31,000 meters in Baker, Grant, Harney and Union counties. Our up-to-date network of overhead and underground lines is approximately 3,000 miles long, representing an investment of over $204 million.
